Residual income, also referred to as passive or recurring income is the income that continues to bring you a monthly payment even after the initial sale has been made.
If you are an affiliate marketer or considering affiliate marketing, residual income is your best shot at securing a steady income each month.
By joining affiliate programs where the member has to pay a monthly fee to the site which they have joined enables you to receive a percentage of the membership fee for each and every month that they remain a member. In a nutshell you make one sale; get paid time and time again.
As an affiliate marketer you may have several affiliate programs that you promote and bring you steady sales each month and that’s exciting when sales are good, but what happens during those times when sales are down? Your income could be significantly reduced.
That’s where residual income comes to the rescue. You will have income rolling in whether or not your immediate sales are up or down.
I encourage you to do both, promote ‘membership style’ affiliate programs, as well as ‘one-time sales’ programs. An example of the types of sites that pay residual income are web hosting sites, dating sites, weight loss sites, how to sites and stock market financial sites, just to name a few.
Finding Residual Income Products and Programs
The same rules apply to finding residual income affiliate programs as for non-recurring income programs. In case you aren’t familiar with what to look for, here’s a quick run down.
- Find a profitable niche and promote related Products
Don’t be all things to all people, focus on a profitable niche and promote only products related to that niche.
For example, a skin care site is nice but a focused “acne” or “anti-aging” skin care site is better. If you’ve settled on an ‘acne’ skin care site, promote products related to acne, promoting a wildly popular lip balm wouldn’t be a wise product selection.
- What is the commission?
Some commissions are a flat fee, but most of them pay a percentage of the sale. Percentages can be tricky so look at the bottom line and not the percentage.
Likewise pay attention to the payment terms. Some merchants pay weekly, monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly. Additionally some pay only when you’ve generated a minimum amount in commissions, for example, you may not receive payment until you’ve accrued $100 in commissions. If this takes a month or more, you could be waiting for you money longer than you had anticipated.
For example, a product that sells for $37 may pay 50% which means $18.50 for you, but another product that sells for $98 may pay 30% which means $29.40 for you. Looking at the percentage the $50 product may look better but in reality the $100 product actually pays better.
- Is the merchant site capable of making a sale?
Look intently at the sales page of the merchant. Are they convincing? Does the site convince you that their product is worth buying? Does it make a compelling statement? What is their return policy? What guarantees do they offer, if any? What payment options do they have? I’ve been to product sites that don’t accept some major credit cards, do you think they’ll make many sales that way, probably not.
- What are the merchant terms?
Always read the terms of the merchant’s contract. Some merchants throw in things like exclusivity, which means you can only promote their products exclusively on your site. Some merchants allow you to promote all their products but only pay commissions on some of them. These are just a couple of examples but there can be many restrictions that you will want to know about before promoting, so read the merchant terms.
These are just a few of the programs that continue to bring me a recurring income, but remember; deciding on a program should first meet the above rules. Willy nilly promoting products because they pay well won’t benefit your business. Taking off without having a focused niche and promoting products that are related to that niche will often times result in dismally low sales or worse yet, no sales at all.
